ENTREPRENEURSHIP: Eye Opening Statistics for Phone App Developers

green

Many of the young entrepreneurs that I encounter, particularly those in university business incubator programs, are expending enormous amounts of resources – both in time and money – on developing phone apps. While this is an exciting, and often times, lucrative endeavor; all too often these ventures prove to be more exciting than lucrative! Here’s why. According to Christopher Mims of the Wall Street Journal, “The average app loses 77% of its users within three days after it is downloaded.” Moreover, according to Mims, “In the U.S., 30% of the time when an app is downloaded, a person never opens it more than twice.” My article here is not intended to discourage app development. Quite the contrary – I try to encourage innovation and new ideas. But, phone app developers need to go into development with their eyes wide open. Here’s another eye opening statistic. According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, as cited by Mims, “For every iPhone sold, 119 apps have been downloaded…” Yet according to Mims, “…we use fewer than a quarter of those apps in any given month.” What this all boils down to is that the competition for the use of phone apps is fierce. To read the Mims article, go to the Wall Street Journal and search for the article entitled, “A Few Ways to Declutter Your Phone.”

NOTES FROM THE FIELD: What’s So Negative (or Positive!) About Negative Interest Rates?

cropped-Logo_Final.jpg

With most of the world’s economies in the doldrums, the central banks of many countries have instituted, or are considering instituting, a policy of negative interest rates. Even Fed chief Janet Yellen, of the US Federal Reserve, has said that the Fed is looking at the possibility of using negative interest rates. Go to the New York Times and search for the article entitled Negative 0.5% Interest Rate: Why People Are Paying to Save. This article discusses what negative interest rates are, why central banks are using them, and the pros and cons of this new tool of monetary policy. Please click on the following links for two articles that explain a bit more about interest rates in general, and low to negative interest rates, in particular: Interest Rate and Zero Interest Rate Policy.

SPECIAL SITUATIONS: Junk Bonds

green

High yield bonds, also known as junk bonds, may be priced attractively enough at current levels to qualify as what we call a Special Situation. Junk bonds are the debt of companies that are less strong from a financial standpoint than other companies, and therefore have a higher risk of default. Investment grade companies carry a credit rating of BBB, A, AA, AAA (Standard & Poor’s) or Baa, A, Aa, Aaa for Moody’s). Junk bonds carry a rating of less than BBB or Baa. Because of the greater credit risk, these bonds typically have to offer a much higher interest rate than do companies that are more financially sound. The interest rate spread between junk bonds and U.S. Treasury securities reflects this higher interest rate differential. The spread varies over different economic cycles. The spread, when particularly large, can also be a gauge of the likelihood of an economic recession. Currently, the spread is quite large. Barron’s magazine has an interesting and informative article on the current state of the junk bond market. Please click Barron’s to go to Barron’s magazine. Search for the article entitled: Where a Junk-Bond Pro Sees Upside Now. You may need to subscribe to Barron’s magazine to view the article.
