Dollar Cost Averaging
Invest in the 20 to 30 stocks over an 18 to 24 month period of time. This means, if you are investing over 24 months, you will be buying a new stock about every month. In some months you might buy a couple of stocks; and other months you might not buy any.

Discount Brokers
To invest in individual securities, it is suggested that you use discount brokers such as Charles Schwab, Ameritrade, E-Trade, etc.
Comparing among the various discount brokers is a good idea. The American Association of Individual Investors (AAII) has some good publications that compare the services and fees charged by the various discount brokers.
When buying the mutual funds listed in our Mutual Funds page, you can purchase them directly from the mutual fund company.
