As described above in the Introduction to this book, the essential characteristics of DUKEs are that they are ever-changing and adaptable (i.e., “dynamic”); they tap into a universal pool of intellect (i.e., “universal knowledge”); and they are in an eBook format.
Books are traditionally one-way experiences (with the possible exception of workbooks). The author of a book writes something and you read what has been written. Beyond that, there is little or no interaction. By contrast, DUKEs are highly interactive, dynamic, and use multiple media resources in the delivery and means of interaction. With DUKEs, we are redefining what books are and how they are used.
The following sections of this book describe the characteristics of DUKEs and suggest ways that DUKEs can be used.
